The Loblaw chain of grocery stores – Fortinos and No Frills – are banding together this Christmas season to raise food, money and awareness to assist Hamilton Food Share.
The 2010 Extra Helping Holiday National Food Drive kicked off November 26, and customers are encouraged to consider picking up an extra item or to donate a few dollars at check-out to help provide food for someone in their community. Loblaw has set a goal to raise $1.35 million and 1.2 million pounds of food across Canada this year.
On average this year, Hamilton Food Share distributed food to more than 18,600 individuals each month – with approximately 8,157 of the recipients being children.
Hamilton Food Share’s most needed items are pasta products, rice, canned meat and fish, dry and canned soups and stews, canned fruit and vegetables, flour, breakfast cereal, peanut butter, canned/powdered milk, fruit juices, pasta sauce, beans and legumes, infant formula and baby food. One hundred per cent of food donations and 70 per cent of funds donated will go to Hamilton Food Share.
The remaining 30 per cent of donated funds will support provincial food bank programs to ensure food banks in areas where Loblaw does not have a store or franchise are still able to benefit from the food drive.
