About Us

Started in 1988 as a response to the hunger crisis affecting thousands in the 1980’s, Hamilton Food Share is the distribution hub of the Emergency Food Network in Hamilton. We serve 12 direct member hunger-relief agencies. The Network is made up of 103 programs across the city. 46 provide emergency groceries, hot meals and Holiday Hamper programs. The other 57 offer other poverty support programs such as clothing, community referrals, seniors’ programs, trusteeship, weekend food programs for kids, pregnant moms’ support groups, to name a few. Together, we serve over 12,250 people in Hamilton, including 4,348 children, every month. Every year, Hamilton Food Share distributes about 2.5 million pounds of fresh and non-perishable food with 60% of the food being fresh or frozen. For every $1 donated, we $5 worth of food to someone in need.

Hamilton Food Share‘s purpose is to increase our community’s capacity to reduce hunger. We do this by supplying much needed food supplies and short-term storage to food banks and hot meal programs. Additionally, our organization establishes community partnerships, donor relations and fundraising activities that support our food recovery operation.

Our support is vital as the resources allocated by Hamilton Food Share defray costs for the emergency food programs and redirect these savings to other program areas. The second purpose of our organization is to work collaboratively across every sector of the community to bring about awareness of hunger, its root causes and the impact it creates for people in need.
