Did you know that September is Hunger Action Month across Canada?
September is a great time to start thinking about hunger in our own community and the many ways we can get involved in helping our neighbours access good, healthy food. With 13,000 individuals visiting a food bank here in Hamilton every month, the need is greater than ever before.
Please encourage your friends, family, or employer to help take action in the following ways:
Week 1: Educate – Food Banks Canada has developed an interactive tool suitable for all ages that allows you to follow along in making the tough decisions that confront people who are living in poverty. See what you would do when making Impossible Choices and learn why hunger is a reality for far too many Canadians.
Week 2: Advocate – Get social! Make your views on hunger known to your elected officials and political candidates. Speak out and tell your MPP that you oppose any changes to the current definition of ODSP to exclude individuals with episodic disabilities.
Week 3: Volunteer – Volunteers play an important role in helping our neighbours get beyond hunger. Please fill out our Expression of Volunteer Interest form here and we will contact you with volunteer opportunities at Hamilton Food Share as they become available.
Week 4: Donate – This month, consider donating the cost of a meal out at a restaurant to help individuals and families experiencing hunger.
